Easily, the biggest downside of ordering a Botanical Bliss, and a task that will be a dealbreaker for many, is that the the customer has to add the padding to their mattress at home. However, assembly is required for several of our favorite organic mattresses, including the Naturepedic EOS mattress, so it’s not uncommon for this style of mattress.

One of the ways PlushBeds offers such competitive pricing for its organic mattresses is by leaving some of the assembly to the customer. We have a LeafScore team member who purchased a Botanical Bliss mattress and loves it, however, there are some steps involved to getting the latex cushioning inside of the organic cotton casing. The benefits of getting such a high quality mattress for a great price are worth it, but consumers who want to steer clear of assembling their own mattress may prefer a bed in a box option like Avocado. Some PlushBeds customers were surprised by the assembly requirement and complained to the BBB that this feature should be better disclosed.

Botanical Bliss vs. Avocado

Avocado mattresses are considered by many to be the industry standard for environmental sustainability. The company started with a focus on non-toxic mattresses for children and has since grown to accommodate adult-size beds.

Like the Botanical Bliss mattress, all Avocado mattresses are GOLS and GOTS certified, made in California, and free of potentially toxic compounds like VOCs, formaldehyde, and more. Some of the brand’s mattresses are also wool-free, making them certified vegan.

Your Avocado mattress arrives compressed in a box, meaning that you’ll have to wait a day or two after delivery for it to re-inflate before sleeping on it. The company also stands out from competitors for its generous one-year trial offer. If you decide you don’t love your mattress during this timeframe, Avocado will arrange to pick it up (free of charge for you) and donate it to charity.

This policy, paired with the mattress’s lower prices, makes it a winner over PlushBeds in our mind.

Botanical Bliss vs. Zenhaven

Zenhaven mattresses are crafted from 100% natural Talalay latex that is certified pure by OEKO-TEX. These mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic and flippable for extra versatility (one side is firmer, the other is softer).

As with other brands, it utilizes a layer of New Zealand wool to act as a natural flame retardant, rather than relying on potentially toxic chemicals. The included cover has also been treated with a botanical antimicrobial treatment to keep things fresh.

The mattress consists of a “five-zone support structure” for a sleeping surface that offers press-free support for extra comfort, especially around your lower back. As with the Botanical Bliss mattress, these mattresses are made from organic materials, but a certified vegan bed is not available.

As the pricing between the Botanical Bliss and Zenhaven mattresses are nearly identical, the deciding factor for you might be the trial and warranty. Zenhaven wins out in this regard, as you will receive a generous 180-day trial offer, and the company will repair and/or re-cover your mattress at any point during the warranty period, so long as you pay the $99 transportation costs.

If you decide you want a refund instead, Zenhaven will donate your mattress to a veteran’s shelter or offer it to employees. That’s less waste in the long run.

Botanical Bliss vs. Purple

Purple mattresses earned their name from the patented material at their core—Hyper-Elastic Polymer™. This ultra-stretchy material is the creation of brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, and it can stretch to more than 15 times its resting size without tearing or becoming damaged. Purple claims this makes it perfect for crafting mattresses that mold to your form without leaving an imprint when you get up.

However, this stretchy polymer is derived from petroleum products, meaning that it has a larger environmental footprint than the other brands in this article. Allergy sufferers and those with chemical sensitives can feel good about the foam’s CertiPUR-US certification, though, as it indicates that the mattress’s core is free of ozone depleters, flame retardants, heavy metals, mercury, VOCs, and other potentially toxic compounds.

Your Purple mattress will arrive compressed in a large bag, so expect it to inflate to full size over several days. The lower pricing will likely make this brand appealing to many shoppers, but keep in mind the mattresses come with a short 100-day trial and ten-year warranty.

Botanical Bliss vs. Naturepedic

The Naturepedic mattress brand has been around for close to two decades, and it specializes in quality bedding that supports both the environment and those who want to live a more natural lifestyle.

Founder Barry A. Cik started Naturepedic when he struggled to find a crib mattress for his grandchild that didn’t consist of potentially toxic compounds like vinyl, PVC, VOCs, and flame retardants.

He set out to provide parents with an option for an organic crib mattress. The result includes a food-grade waterproof surface consisting of a moisture-wicking material made from non-GMO sugarcane. The company has since branched out to provide organic mattresses for both kids and adults.

Unlike many of the other brands listed here, Naturepedic mattresses have inner steel coils for support. These allow for full body-contouring, the company claims, while isolating your movements and keeping you better aligned for less back pain when you wake up.

Some may prefer the additional support they provide, while others will likely feel more comfortable with the ultra-conforming latex-core construction of the Botanical Bliss mattress and other bed-in-a-box brands.

All Naturepedic mattresses are made in the U.S. and come at various price points, including an ultra-luxurious Halcyon line that includes organic cashmere in its construction.

Botanical Bliss vs. Birch

Birch claims to sell the world’s most comfortable, sustainably sourced mattresses and other sleep products. The company is committed to avoiding using polyurethane-based foams and other harsh chemicals in favor of organic wool, cotton, and latex. Likewise, Birch donates 1% of all sales to the National Forest Foundation to support wilderness spaces.

All Birch mattresses are made from wool from free-range sheep that were raised in compliance with the PGC Wrightson Wool Integrity Program, and Talalay-brand latex harvested from rubber trees in Asia, Africa, and Brazil. These materials and all others are GREENGUARD Gold, GOTS, and GOLS certified, and the latex hybrid mattress is Rainforest Alliance Certified™ for using materials that were sustainably harvested in ways that met high environmental and worker standards.

Customers that prefer traditional style mattresses will appreciate that some Birch models contain inner springs for extra support. Even so, the beds are shipped compressed in boxes and may take an hour after opening to reach their full size.

Birch wins points over PlushBeds because of its specificity over the origins of each component and its competitive pricing.

Botanical Bliss vs. Saatva

This luxury mattress brand relies on memory foam bases surrounded by organic cotton and latex. You can choose from a variety of firmness levels, as well as whether you want an inner coil structure or prefer memory foam instead. Regardless, all Saatva mattresses will contain CertiPUR-US certified materials free from potential toxins like heavy metals, ozone depleters, phthalates, formaldehyde, and possible toxic flame retardants.

All Saatva mattresses are made in the U.S., with 100% of its foam and 85% of its other components originating in the U.S. as well. Just note that these materials aren’t GOLS or GOTS certified.

One of Saatva’s selling points is that the mattresses won’t ship out crammed in small boxes. However, this might make the setup process more aggravating for some customers who prefer to deal with things themselves. Regardless, you can feel good about the company’s 180-night sleep trial period (one of the longer ones in the industry) and donation policy for used mattresses. Even if the mattress isn’t right for you, chances are excellent it won’t end up in the landfill

PlushBeds vs. the rest

All in all, PlushBeds are an excellent mid-range choice for a fully latex mattress, with the Botanical Bliss offering the best quality and the Natural Bliss offering one of the best options for vegans or those wanting a wool-free mattress without need for a prescription. We are particularly impressed by PlushBeds guarantee of a 100 night no obligation trial period and a 25 year limited warranty.

PlushBeds offer an impressive combination of reputation, quality, affordability, customization, and eco-credentials, with Botanical Bliss boasting the rare Eco-Institut certification making it a top choice for a latex mattress. Their Natural Bliss mattress is also a fantastic choice, especially if you’re vegan or otherwise looking for a wool-free option.

Savvy Rest and PlushBeds are very similar for latex mattresses, although PlushBeds are a little more affordable. The Botanical Bliss starts at $1,099 and rises to $2,898, and the Natural Bliss (vegan) Mattress starts at $999 and rises to $2,498. In comparison, Savvy Rest’s Serenity ranges in price from $1,999 for a Dunlop Twin to $4,799 for a Talalay Cali King. If you’re under 160 lbs. or buying a mattress for a child, their Tranquility Mattress is one way to save money as it ranges from $1,699 to $3,999. Both companies also offer similar excellent customization, so you can choose firmness across three layers and for both sides of the bed.

My Green Mattress also has a 100-night sleep trial and if you don’t want to keep the mattress after your 100 nights, My Green Mattress will work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money. My Green Mattress also offer a 25-year limited warranty (full 10 year, then prorated). OMI offer a 90-day sleep trial and a 20-year limited warranty on all mattresses, as do Obasan. However, Obasan also offer a much longer ‘layer exchange’ period;After their 30-night free trial (during which they recommend you don’t move any layers around), they ask that you contact them about any persistent discomfort and offer an exchange of layers within the first 180 days.Most Naturepedic mattresses come with a limited 20-year warranty including full repair and replacement within the first 10 years and a pro-rated warranty for the remaining ten. Naturepedic have a 90-day sleep trial and ‘comfort exchange’ program for most mattress models, but be sure to check details for your particular model before buying and be aware that if you go through another retailer, that retailer’s policy applies instead.

Overall, though, OMI is your best bet for a non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, latex mattress and is still quite affordable. If you’re looking for a budget option, consider Savvy Rest’s Tranquility Mattress if you’re a smaller, solo sleeper or buying for a child, or go for My Green Mattress’s Hope Mattress. You can also put your info into Obasan’s site and see how you fare with their algorithms. Depending on your needs, they may have a budget-friendly option that is highly customized. As always, check your mattress needs against the configurations available from all of these companies as your particular requirements (and potential requirements in years to come) may be better served by one than the others.
